Kensington

Cottage House, Kensington

Completed: 2017

Practice Roles: Architect, Contract Administrator, and Quantity Surveyor

Consulting Engineer: Milk Structures

Contractor: Building & Decorating Ltd

Forming part of a characterful neighbourhood close to Hyde Park, this cottage-style terraced house offered limited possibilities within the existing volume and split levels. The historic value was principally within to the front elevation, which was restored with traditional wrought iron railings.

Valuable additional space was created at all levels, excavating a rear basement and regularizing the floor levels and circulation. Daylight was introduced into the previously dark basement via a walk-on to the front bay window and rear terrace. A base palette of white oiled oak floor with judicious uses of marble was offset against a concrete plinth and walnut wardrobes.
